WHAT IS A GRANNY FLAT?
A Granny Flat is also known as an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), secondary dwelling, laneway house, or in-law suite. Granny Flats are self-contained living spaces that are either attached or detached to the primary residence and located on the same property.
WHAT IS THE GRANNY FLAT LAW?
The California Granny Flat laws (SB 1069, SB 229) and Assembly Bills 2299, 2406 and 494 are intended to grow the number of secondary units built in backyards. They significantly reduce restrictions on building accessory dwelling units (ADUs), also known as granny flats or secondary units. The following is a summary of Senate Bill No. 1069 from the California Legislative. For more details on the laws, you can refer to our Granny Flat Law Information Sheet or visit the California Legislative Information website.
